MELANIE NATHAN, Executive Director African Human Rights Coalition Statement on Election of Donald Trump to U.S. Presidency. Nov 06, 2024.
Despite his conviction for 34 crimes, and other pending charges, America has decided to return former President Trump to the White House.
Based on Trump’s direct threats, and demonization of marginalized and vulnerable communities and what we know of his 2016 administration, this outcome has frightening consequences not only for America, for the entire globe, and especially for immigrants, LGBTQI+ people and those forcibly displaced seeking protection, resettlement and asylum.
Trump’s embrace of anti-democratic, Antisemitic, Islamophobic, xenophobic, and racist conspiracy theories and tropes causes discord within communities and has led to distrust in our democratic institutions.
So many millions of Americans voted for this, causing us to feel unsafe within America and unprotected abroad. The normalized hate-fueled conspiracy theories and Project 25 helm a dehumanizing and dangerous agenda outlined by the Trump campaign.
Trump disregards the most basic of America's human rights obligations as he threatens mass deportations, separating families, and immigration bans. We are concerned that he will gut the refugee protection and resettlement structures, thwarting U.S. obligations, minimizing annual presidential determination quotas and hence further endangering those forcibly displaced and seeking protection from violence and untold harms.
His attacks on civil rights, anti-women and anti-LGBTQI+ policies spell unknown dangers for our country. His promise of political revenge is exacerbated by his new level of impunity handed to him by the right wing activist Justices he appointed to SCOTUS.
Our long-held institutions are threatened by a presidency that is poised to undermine our democracy and freedom. We cannot help but be reminded of his embarrassment to our country on the international stage, and worse yet he is a danger to global peace and security.
We are obligated to stand up and protect our communities and our democracy. To fight for the dignity of those forcibly displaced. AHRC promises to strengthen our coalition and to continue the fight for equality, justice, protection and pathways, despite these difficult circumstances.
