Virulent Human Rights abuser and Anti LGBT President RUTO from Kenya is at the White House today. He has received the usual stately greetings, as should any head of state. Yet, the United States and President Biden has the onerous burden of balancing global and U.S. security needs with abhorrent human rights infractions.
While it is important to align Kenya and the United States of America on issues such as terrorism in the region, it is putrid to think that we are courting, funding, and harboring those who are supportive of future, extreme anti-homosexuality laws, ongoing violence and criminalizing laws targeting lesbians, gays, bisexual, transgender, queer, non-binary and intersex people.
During a time when anti-LGBTQI legislation is on the rise in the East Africa region, to include the fact that Kenya is promoting harsher criminalizing and punitive measures against LGBTI people, Ruto is licensing and presiding over a Kenya that permits state and non-state actors to viciously attack LGBT people.
Ruto is also failing to abide its international treaties by refusing to register LGBTQ refugees, who are stuck in Kenya with no pathways to protection.
This is a very difficult balancing act for President Biden, who no doubt does not want to be seen to be interfering in colonial fashion with a sovereign country that considers the mythical idea that being LGBTI is un-African and hence criminal.
