Since passage of Anti LGBT Act Violence and Persecution on Rise in Uganda

AHRC Staff , July 11, 2024

KAMPALA- From Uganda, HRAPF reports each month on the state of persecution and violence against LGBTI Ugandans, following the passage of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, otherwise known as "The Kill the gays Bill" - Here is the Report for June 2024:

We handled a total of 81 cases in the month of June 2024, marking a slight reduction from 83 cases handled in May 2024.

Out of the 81 cases handled, 32 cases involved actions that directly targeted people for negative treatment on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity, representing 39.5% of all the cases handled during the month of June 2024.

There was a decrease in the number of cases in which individuals were specifically targeted for negative treatment on the basis of their SOGIE, from 41 cases in May 2024 to 32 cases in June 2024, and the number of victims of these incidents reduced from 50 persons in May to 34 persons in June.

Out of the 32 cases in which LGBTIQ people were specifically targeted for detrimental treatment during the month of June 2024, 15 cases involved violence and threats of violence against persons on the basis of their SOGIE, 12 were eviction cases while 5 cases involved arrests for sexuality-related reasons.

AHRC believes there are many more cases than reported to HRAPf. Because many people who report to us say they are afraid to report to any one internally. HRAP's reports give an indication of patterns and reflect surges or drops as well as nature of cases, which can be applied across the board.
